The Duke was actually built in England
in 1983 and shipped all the way to California in packing cases, where
it was reconstructed. It's
perhaps the most authentic British pub i've been
to in California and it's frequented by expats and Americans of all
ages. Service is great and they have a decent selection of beers, although
most are cooled too much to suit the American taste and they could
do with an extra English draught beer or two to make it even more authentic.
Darts is a popular pastime in here, usually being played by Americans
who are learning the art ! The food is excellent, very tasty and well
prepared, but arguably a little on the pricy side. They do a mean Fish
and Chips
in two sizes and this is worth the trip on its own. It's not known
as a sports bar, but they will show big events from
the UK, but watch out for the steep 20 Dollar cover charge. That's
not uncommon out here though, but it seems a lot given you will be
spending money while you are there. The place is even equipped with
its very
own snug,
which is something that you don't often see in England
these days, although it rarely gets used. I saw one of the funniest
things I have ever seen in this pub many years ago. While I was sitting
there eating dinner, I saw a party of Chinese people
come in for an English takeaway. I laughed so much I almost couldn't
finish eating.
In short, a great pub, excellent atmosphere with good food and
friendly staff.
A real
home
from home.
