If you don't know the story about Maggie
Dixon, then
you have to look it up. In a nutshell, Maggie was found guilty of murdering
her own child even though she protested her innocence.
She was sentenced to death by hanging in the Grassmarket gallows. After
the hanging was completed, she was cut down and her family beat the
body snatchers to claim her body ! They say the jolting of the cart
that she was carried on restarted her circulation and she survived.
She could not be hung again because she was pronounced dead at the
gallows, so they had to assume her survival was an act of God. She
went on to give birth to more children and became affectionately known
as Half Hangit Maggie ! That's the story in a few sentences and this
is her bar :-) It's a rather trendy place, with a few scary and quite
macabre displays around the place, but it's all in very good taste.
In common with all Edinburgh pubs, they serve great and well kept beer.
The atmosphere is exceptionally friendly and you immediately feel welcome
as soon as you arrive. They say that once you have drunk in Maggie's
you never really leave. They say that images of the biggest drinkers
can often be seen appearing through the walls, but they can only be
captured on camera. It all seems a little far fetched to me, but who
am I to
argue. I'm just a humble drinker and investigative journalist for your
favourite Oslo pub site :-) I'll leave you to be the judge.....
