The Kenilworth is in the heart of Edinburgh
drinking country on Rose Street and
is very popular with the locals and tourists alike. It takes its name
from a novel by Sir Walter Scott,
whose portrait hangs outside the pub. They serve the excellent Caledonian
80 and Deuchars IPA and I must admit
that
when
I was there
it was a
real
effort
to
leave ! The beer was just so good and going down so well. It was indeed
very cheap too after becoming accustomed to Oslo prices. The pub has
good range of very keenly priced snacks, sandwiches and main meals.
A main meal can be bought here for not much more than five Pounds and
snacks for just over two Pounds. The original carved mahogany bar itself
is actually rather large and fills
the centre
of the pub,
so wherever you are you are never far away from being able to order
a beer ! The interior is late Victorian and has remained untouched
for many years. Just underneath the Jacobean style ceiling, the beautiful
stained glass windows of the second floor can still be seen. The etched
mirrors are also original and its quite amazing how they have stood
the test of time. There are many bars in Rose Street and Thistle Street,
but this one has character, is largely original and serves great beer.
It's well worth a visit. |
