I have made a number of trips to London
over the last two or three years and this is one pub that I always
try and find time to visit. I really do like the London pub scene as
there are many quality traditional pubs serving excellent beers at
reasonable prices, but the Head of Steam really does stand out from
the crowd. It's rather close to the London office of Learning Tree
International, the computer training people and it was the lecturers
from there that initially told me about this place. In fact, they are
all very good customers and are often to be found in here after a hard
days teaching ! It's located right outside Euston station and these
days I have absolutely no problem whatsoever when my train is delayed.
In fact I positively look forward to it. It's a Mecca for railway enthusiasts
as it's full of railway memorabilia. I'm not a railway man myself,
but it's amazing how many interesting things they have from all over
the country. Even non-railway enthusiasts have to be impressed. I suspect
there's even one or two bus spotters in there as it's right next to
a small bus station :-) However, let's not forget the real reason for
going there and that is of course their ale. The Head of Steam is
widely recognised by Camra for the wide range and quality of it's cask
ales. What makes it so special though is the wide selection of guest
beers. The quality of most of them is excellent and they are brewed
by many small breweries that I have never heard of. Don't forget to
take away a souvenir when you visit. You can buy 'Head of Steam' beer
glasses and mugs, but if the bar staff can't remember where they are,
they are in the cupboard by the entrance ! |
