The literature tells you this is an
authentic Irish pub, but it's not perhaps what I would call truly authentic.
It's similar to what you might find in modern downtown Dublin today,
but perhaps not authentic in the truest sense of the word. The most
authentic thing for me is the Irish bar staff, who are very friendly,
welcoming and helpful. Good on you guys ! There's not a particularly
wide selection of draft beers, but they do have Guinness and for those
hot summer days, Heineken and Strongbow cider. They also have that
truly awful Murphy's Red, which is nothing more than red water with
absolutely no taste whatsoever ! I'm sure
it can't be that popular in Ireland. With excellent beers like Kilkenny
and Caffreys, why would
any self respecting Irishman want to drink Murphy's Red ?? They are
part of a small worldwide chain which has a presence in the US too.
They show a wide range of sporting events from Ireland, the UK and
NFL/NBA from the States and they have regular live gigs too. See
their web site for further details. Prior to becoming Kitty's, the
Café Lion
could be found in this location, one of Madrid's oldest
and most famous cafés. Individuals such as García Lorca, Salvatore Dalí and
Camilo José Cela, could be found here, discussing issues of
the period. For this reason, they have maintained and incorporated
this history into the structure and atmosphere of the pub, which is
a very nice touch. It certainly make you wonder what Dalí was
drinking during his time at the café.... not Murphy's Red
that's for sure !!!
