times and it's the heart of the community. It's
the
place
where
everyone
meets
up.
There's a notice board in the corner of the pub, advertising everything
from local concerts to missing pets ! It's a vast cavernous place inside
and the ceiling must be 10m from the floor, so there's no danger of
it becoming too smoky. The brickwork is truly amazing. The typical
Dutch bricks are so small and I often wonder how long it took to build.
I sometime struggle to work out what the theme of this place is. It's
not typiclly
Dutch,
Belgian
or
English
for that
matter, 
even though there is a big red English telephone box in the
corner ! Does
it need a theme though ? Of course not. It's interesting to see how
the clientele changes throughout the day. In the mornings
you
see
the
coffee
drinkers
with
their newspapers,
then at lunchtime, there's the families with kids, popping in for a
bite to eat while Dad has a quick beer, then in the evening, it's the
party goers ! There is a good selection of bottled and draught beers
as one would expect. Indeed, if there wasn't, it would not be on this
site ! They 
serve
excellent snacks at lunchtime and early evening, but I would not come
here for main meal. I once came here for a Karaoke
evening,
expecting people to sing. It
turned
out
to be
one
girl who
played the
guitar
and sang
(who
was excellent) and about 15 other guys reciting Dutch literature and
poetry. It was one of the most boring things I have ever seen ! So,
give that a wide berth if that kind of thing does not interest you,
but make sure you visit the Boterwaag when in Den Haag. Hey, I'm a
poet and I didn't know it !
