This place is simply fantastic. The
dark wood and candle-light ambience is made even more enchanting when
you take a closer look at all of the great memorabilia that covers
every inch of wall space and some floor space as well. Some tables
have life-size costumed mannekins sitting at them and you have all
the Belgian puppet artifacts hanging on the walls. Also hard to miss
are the medieval cross-bows and a pike with some stuffed
mice perched on it. There are essentially four levels to this place
if you count the chairs outside on the street. Inside there are
three separate levels. The tables downstairs in the back are Singer
sewing stations with the sewing machines still in place.
The selection is highly respectable. There are 71
beers on the menu (14 of them lambic products). They have a wide
selection of the more mainstream Belgian
beers (Leffe, Chimay, Duvel, etc) balanced out with a lot of the
more artisanal ones.
The food is supposed to be excellent, but I didn't eat here so I
cannot comment, but it sure looked good from where I was sitting.
This really is an indoor or outdoor pub, not both. In the summer,
you will find everyone sitting outside, only venturing inside to
use the toilets, but in the wintertime, everyone is of course soaking
up the excellent atmosphere inside.
For a place so close to the Grand Place and Manneken Pis tourist
traps, this place really is a gem. It doesn't really cater for the
tourist in my opinion... just for the beer lover.... and that's the
way we like it here at Oslopubs ! |
