No trip to California is complete for me without dinner at the Fish
Market, Santa Clara. If you want the freshest fish, this is the place
to come. This restaurant is part of a small chain of just eight restaurants
dotted around California and Arizona. The Santa Clara Fish Market was
one of the first to be opened way back in the late seventies and has
been serving great food since then. The fish they serve is so fresh
that the menu changes daily and they can often run out of a particular
fish during the evening, so get there early. They have a great Oyster
Bar too, if you are into that kind of thing and a Retail Fish Market
where you can buy fish to take home. In fact, you can order anything
off the menu to take home too, although I am not sure that I would
want to do that ! Their New England Clam Chowder with a touch of Red
Tabasco sauce and a sprinking of pepper is something else and has to
be recommended. I often have Shark or Swordfish and sometimes the Tuna
too and I have not been disappointed. The service is usually fine,
but there have been occasions where the food has been served cold or
they got the order mixed up with someone else, but don't let that put
you off. They will also add a 15% service charge for parties of 10
or more which I am not really happy with, but that's common in the
US. They have a really friendly bar where you can start or end your
evening with a quiet drink. They have a decent selection of beers and
their wine list should cater for most tastes. The house Chardonnay
is certainly very drinkable. Booking is advisable, but I have never
had to wait for too long whenever I
have
been here
and
not
booked. Take a look at their own web site for more information and
include The Fish Market in your dining plans one evening. It's also
great for Birthdays and any other celebrations and be sure to tell
them when you arrive if you don't mind the extra attention ! |
